When you relocate to Quebec you may find yourself with the urge to get active, get back into an exercise routine, or even try a new and exciting sport. Plenty of sports in Quebec are available to you, many of which are specific to the cold winter climate. Here is the lowdown on a few favourites from Settle-in.com.
Created in Canada by North American natives, Lacrosse is a sport in Quebec that can be played both indoors and outdoors. Teams of 10 face off against each other, and while running, players throw a small rubber ball to each other using a stick with a net. They try to get as many balls into the goal as possible. Quebec offers both men’s and women’s teams.
Skiing and Snowboarding
These downhill sports are definitely staples during Quebec’s winter months. Quebec has some fantastic ski mountains, from St. Sauver to Mont Tremblant and Mont Bromont. Skiing and snowboarding enjoyed recreationally by many and competitively by a few. Lessons are offered, so don’t worry if you’re a beginner.
Cross-Country Skiing and Snowshoeing
Much like skiing and snowboarding, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing can be enjoyed recreationally and competitively. Quebec has many beautiful trails for both of these sports. It’s impossible not to talk about hockey when listing sports in Quebec! Lots of children begin playing as soon as they can walk, and in many cases they will play for the rest of their lives. There are all sorts of ways to enjoy this sport, from women’s and men’s leagues for exercise and fun, competitive leagues for all ages, provincial teams, and “junior” teams, in which (mostly men) are paid to play for a team. The Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL), American Hockey League (AHL) and National Hockey League (NHL) are the higher and more professional levels of ice hockey. In Quebec, the celebrated Montreal Canadians represent the province in the NHL.
