Requirements for transferring ownership of a vehicle in Quebec

  • Before the vehicle can be registered to the new owner, the odometer reading must be declared. In the case that the odometer of a vehicle has been replaced, the owner is responsible for declaring the total number of kilometers the vehicle has traveled. This is a requirement for all vehicles that are used for the transportation of people or goods. (Note that is is not applicable to scooters, new vehicles, or motorcycles with a cylinder size less than or equal to 125 cubic centimetres).
  • If there are any unpaid fines associated with the buyer or seller of a vehicle, the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec will refuse the vehicles registration until the fine has been paid, and there is confirmation from the collector.

In The Case of Death

If you are the liquidator of a succession, you hold the responsibility of transferring ownership of a vehicle to the rightful heir. In order to do this, you (the liquidator) must complete the Declaration of transfer of ownership following a death form, and take it, along with the require documents to the Société de l’assurance automobile service outlet. Selling to a Dealer

If you sell your vehicle to a dealer, you should contact the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec and check if you can be refunded for the remaining cost of the registration you paid on that vehicle.
